Planting Tips

1. Soil Preparation: Clear the area, work it well with the rotary hoe and then covered it with layers of News Paper (6 sheets). Cover this with Pea Straw then water it so that it will start to rot down and not blow away. This will stop the weeds for the first two years, make a great job of mulching the soil, retain soil moisture and attract the earth worms.
2. Potting Mix: Plant all of the plants through the layers of Pea Straw
and Paper with at least the same amount again of fresh potting media
as there is in the planter bags. (This is not hard sell just good
old common sense. When the plants come out of their bags and are
planted in the soil, regardless of your preparation, they have to
change their habitat and their nutrient source.) If you dig the hole
for the plant twice the size of the bag and place the new potting
mix below and around the plant and water it in well so that the plant
is firm, then the plant will thrive and by the time the roots have
reached the soil it will have already acclimatized to the new location
and will readily adapt to the local soil conditions. Check that the
Potting Mix you buy incorporates either a six or nine month Slow
Release Fertilizer. The Potting Mix that we use is our own commercially
prepared recipe containing Osmocote Nine Month Slow Release Fertilizer,
a Fungicide and a Wetting Agent and we sell that in 40 litre bags.
To Cut the Hedge
Remember that a hedge will always grow out sideways more at the top than at the
bottom because it gets more light up there. If you let this continue your hedge will
end up with no leaves at the bottom (woody Bottom). Therefore if you cut your
hedge and taper it toward the top the leaves at the bottom will receive plenty of
light and live ! This taper is slight, only about 5 degrees but it is the difference.
